Conroy Chosen as Finalist in "Science as Art" Competition

Artwork shows image of platinum during neutron irradiation

April 2017
Michele Conroy

Scientist Michele Conroy was selected as a finalist in the 2017 Materials Research Society (MRS) Spring Meeting Science as Art competition.

Conroy was chosen for capturing an image of platinum breaking free from its constraints to form spherical sculptures during neutron irradiation. Conroy used a scanning electron microscope to capture the image, and added color to show detail.

The chairmen for the MRS Spring Meeting chose Conroy's image from among 96 entries. As one of the 50 finalists, Conroy's image was included in the art competition at the 2017 MRS Spring Meeting in Phoenix, AZ.

About Conroy

Conroy joined PNNL in 2015 as a postdoc researcher. In April 2017 she was hired as a full-time staff member. Her core research areas are materials engineering and electron microscopy. Conroy earned her PhD in Electrical Engineering from Tyndall National Institute in Ireland.
