Instrument Performance Testing

PNNL maintains an extensive instrument testing facility for evaluating the response of instrumentation to a variety of radiation sources and environmental conditions. Although the laboratory is focused on evaluating radiation detection instrumentation, other equipment and systems may be tested including prototype instrumentation under development by other PNNL organizations. Testing may be performed to a variety of national and international standards including Department of U.S. Homeland Security instrument performance standards. The instrument testing facility has been used to:

  • Confirm the operability of equipment PNNL or PNNL clients are deploying in areas with extreme environmental conditions
  • Evaluate the performance of radiation detection instruments that may be used for interdiction or first response
  • Characterize the radiological response of radiation detection instrumentation including energy response, angularity, accuracy, stability, sensitivity and response time
  • Demonstrate compliance of shipping packages with transportation requirements.
