Safety and Risk Assessment of Engineered Systems

Risk management of engineered systems and processes is generally based on a set of hazard and accident analyses and safety controls. This set of analyses and the resultant safety-related hardware, procedures and planning is referred to as the safety basis (by the U.S. Department of Energy for Nuclear Facilities) or process safety management (in the chemical industry) or known by many other names. PNNL has extensive experience with both the analysis and risk management aspects of Safety and Risk Assessment in various applications including industrial, aerospace, chemical, waste management, healthcare and the military. Many PNNL staff participate in the ongoing development of the technologies being applied in this area.
