Biography

Srinivas Katipamula is a Staff Scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). For over 25 years, Katipamula’s career has focused on improving the operating efficiency of commercial buildings. Prior to joining PNNL, he led the analytics group at the Enron Energy Services (EES). Previously, he also worked at Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL), at Texas A&M University, where he developed a number of measurement and verification techniques to measure energy savings from retrofits. He has extensive technical experience in the evaluation of advanced design concepts for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems (HVAC), development of automated fault detection and diagnostic techniques, self-correcting controls, building and energy system simulations, and analysis and evaluation of new energy efficient technologies, development and use of analytical modeling techniques.

At PNNL, Dr. Katipamula leads a number of research projects in advanced building controls, automated fault detection and diagnostics, building operations and building-grid integration. Over the past decade, Dr. Katipamula led a team of PNNL staff that developed the re-tuning process to improve operational efficiency in commercial buildings. This systematic process leverages data from building automation system (BAS) to identify operational problems. These problems when corrected at low or no implementation cost can lead to energy savings between 10% and 30%.

Dr. Katipamula also leads the building-grid integration research, development and deployment activities at PNNL. His major responsibilities include development of transaction-based controls for commercial and residential buildings to make them more grid responsive. He is also responsible for many Grid Modernization Laboratory Consortium Category 2 research topics related to this area. He is currently leading a multi-campus research and development effort on Clean Energy and Transactive Campus. He also manages all the application development of an open source software platform - VOLTTRON™.

Dr. Katipamula has developed tools to validate and analyze measured building energy performance data, developed physical/empirical energy use models to verify energy savings from energy conservation retrofits, developed tools to analyze monitored building energy data from standalone data loggers as well as BAS. He led the rooftop unit (RTU) challenge and advanced RTU controls work at PNNL.

While working for EES, Dr. Katipamula managed the Analytics Group within the Retail Operation Center. That group was responsible for collecting and analyzing the customer data. He designed, developed and implemented automated procedures to identify problems and energy savings and operation and maintenance opportunities.

At the ESL, Dr. Katipamula was a key member of the Texas LoanSTAR project; he led energy savings analysis work. He developed tools to validate and analyze measured building energy performance data and developed physical/empirical energy use models to verify energy savings from energy conservation retrofits.

A fellow of the American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has participated and chaired in number of HVAC road mapping workshops for Department of Energy, Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E), National Resources, Canada, and Bonneville Power Administration. Nationally, Katipamula served on a number of technical advisory panels for the California Energy Commission, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology Institute and the Northwest Power Planning Council. He has also reviewed proposals for a number of organizations including, National Science Foundation and ARPA-E. He currently serves on ASHRAE Standards Committee and several other ASHRAE technical committees. He is a former editor of ASME Journal of Energy Resources Technology.
