Biography

Since joining Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 1976, Dr. Henager has worked in a variety of materials science areas, concentrating on radiation effects, mechanical properties and strength of materials, and computational materials science of interfaces and deformation in metals and alloys. He is currently Team Lead for the Structural Materials and Characterization Team in the Reactor Materials and Mechanical Design Group within the Nuclear Sciences Division. In addition to his Team Lead duties, Dr. Henager maintains an active research portfolio. He is the PI for a 3-year project exploring the development of tough W-based composites for Fusion Reactor Materials in collaboration with University of California Santa Barbara, he is the PI of a project developing SiC-based alloys for advanced nuclear systems for Office of Nuclear Energy, and he researches pre-ceramic polymers and solid-state displacement reactions for joining SiC-based ceramics and composites for the Office of Fusion Energy Sciences. Dr. Henager has published extensively in the area of deformation using atomistic models in metals and nanolayered materials. He has explored radiation damage effects in materials, including nanolayered composites and SiC/SiC composites. The models deal with fundamental radiation effects, thermal conductivity, and phase stability issues. More recently, he is co-PI for a project studying corrosion of uranium-molybdenum (U-Mo) alloys for advanced fission reactors requiring accident tolerant fuels.

In 1998, he completed a year assignment to the US Department of Energy, Basic Energy Sciences, Materials Science and Engineering where he helped plan a major new initiative in Computational Materials Science that established the Computational Materials Science Network (CMSN), a funded network of computational materials researchers. He has published over 115 papers and articles, has edited two books, and has eight U.S. Patents. He is also Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Materials Sciences, University of Washington, Seattle, WA and member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the Journal of Nuclear Materials. He served as Publication chair for the 15th International Conference on Fusion Reactor Materials (ICFRM-15), 2011, held in Charleston, SC and was publication co-chair for the 16th International Conference on Fusion Reactor Materials (ICFRM-16), 2013, held in Beijing, China.
