Biography

William Ivans, P.E., PMSFPE, is a principal engineer within the Risk and Decision Sciences Group at PNNL. He has garnered over ten years of experience in the development and application of risk-informed methods and decision support tools, having worked not only in academic- and research-based environments but also for nuclear utilities and vendors. At PNNL he provides expert technical, regulatory and training support to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in support of their licensing and research activities, including risk-informed, performance-based fire protection programs, technical specification initiatives, seismic risk assessments and expert elicitation.

More recently, Ivans has been leading an effort to support Japan's Nuclear Damage Compensation & Decommissioning Facilitation Corporation (NDF) to inform it's strategic plan for decommissioning of the Fukushima site, particularly with regard to the evaluation of fuel debris retrieval methods. Prior to joining PNNL, Ivans gained experience performing and leading risk assessments in several specialized areas, from fire and security risks to seismic and other external hazards (external flooding, high winds, etc).

Ivans holds a BS and MS in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Florida, as well as an MS in Fire Protection Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
