Biography

Dr. Wellman is a staff scientist, program manager, and the manager of the Environmental Health and Remediation market sector at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Dr. Wellman holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Washington State University. Her scientific expertise is in understanding and predicting contaminant transport pathways and kinetics, aqueous and mineral surface geochemistry, and reaction kinetics for environmental remediation. She builds upon this fundamental understanding to develop and implement systems-based approaches for characterizing, monitoring and remediating contaminated groundwater and soil at sites throughout the Department of Energy, as well as internationally, supporting site contractors and site owners. In 2009, Dr. Wellman served as the Chief Scientist for the Office of Technology Innovation and Development for Groundwater and Soil Remediation, wherein she resolved technical issues and assessed technology readiness for addressing Department of Energy - Office of Environmental Management's challenges in groundwater and soil remediation. Currently, Dr. Wellman is the Program Manager of a multi-institutional science and technology DOE-EM program that coordinates and integrates efforts from basic science (DOE Office of Science), applied research (DOE-EM), and DOE site operation contractors, in a collaborative effort to address complex challenges in subsurface soil and groundwater characterization, remediation, and monitoring. Dr. Wellman is the technical lead for the joint DOE National Laboratory team (Savannah River and Pacific Northwest National Laboratories) supporting Tokyo Electric Power Company's response to on-site environmental contamination issues resulting from the Fukushima Daiichi incident. The Savannah River and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory team is working to understand radionuclide contaminant mitigation, develop and implement solutions to remediate environmental media, and demonstrate a systems-based understanding of the environmental remediation challenges in order to gain public and stakeholder support and acceptance.
