Jeff Serne Characterizes Highly Contaminated Sediment Samples from Under Hanford Single-Shell Tanks

January 2000
ETD’s Jeff Serne provided the technical leadership for the ETD research team that characterized the first subsurface sediment core from directly beneath a Hanford single-shell tank (SST). The information generated from this core as well as other cores (from traditional vertical borehole drilling) provides the first detailed geochemical glimpse of sediments that have been contacted by solution leaked from these highly saline/alkaline waste tanks. This information is critical in understanding the subsurface inventory and transport of contaminants. These data also provide guidance for leak detection as the site makes decisions on the final disposition of the tanks. The capabilities his team developed have positioned ETD for future involvement with additional sediment cores collected at other Hanford SST waste sites.
