Metal Research Paper Honored by American Iron and Steel Institute

Nine-member research team includes scientist who performed his research at PNNL

A team of researchers from a handful of DOE national labs—including PNNL—and industry recently received a prestigious award from the American Iron and Steel Institute.

Xiaohua Hu, a former PNNL researcher, was one of nine to receive the 2018 Institute Medal at this year's AISI General Meeting in Washington D.C. They were honored at the meeting's Board of Directors Breakfast on May 1, 2018.

The medal recognizes technical papers with "special merit and importance in connection with the activities and interests of the iron and steel industry."

The team, funded by DOE's Vehicle Technologies Office, was recognized for their paper "Deformation Mode and Strain Path Dependence of Martensite Phase Transformation in a Medium Manganese TRIP Steel." Besides PNNL, where Hu performed this research, institutions represented by the team include Argonne and Oak Ridge national laboratories, AK Steel, and General Motors.

"It is my honor to congratulate this year's Institute Medal winners and finalists on their outstanding achievements," said Roger Newport, AISI chairman and CEO of AK Steel. "We thank them for their tireless efforts to ensure that the North American steel industry remains among the most competitive in the world through continued innovation and development."

The American Iron and Steel Institute Medal was established in 1927 by AISI's Board of Directors in honor of the late Elbert H. Gary, AISI's founder and first president, to stimulate improvement in the iron and steel and allied industries.
