Brooks Leads Effort to Design Fuel System for Return Trip from Mars

Congratulations to ETD's Kriston Brooks and his team on winning a $13M project to develop the Microchannel In Situ Propellant Production System. This system will collect carbon dioxide from the Martian atmosphere, react it with hydrogen gas carried from Earth, and separate individual components, recovering water and producing fuel (methane) and oxidizer (oxygen) for the return voyage. This NASA-sponsored project will develop a microtechnology-based propellant production system that will reduce hardware launch mass. The systemís underlying chemical and thermal systems represent a breakthrough technology that will reduce the cost and increase the reliability for a broad array of Martian and lunar systems.
