Brandt Receives National Environmental Achievement Award

January 2005
Congratulations to ETD's Charlie Brandt on being part of the Battelle team winning the Army Corps of Engineers Chief of Engineers Design and Environmental Merit Award. This award, created in 1965, recognizes excellence in design and environmental achievement by the Corps and its partners. The team received the award for innovative environmental evaluation techniques at the Savannah Open Burning Ground, Illinois. Because of the site's complexity, including the potential for unexploded ordinance, Brandt helped develop and implement a plan that identified contaminant sources and ecological resources at risk in a fine-grained way that avoided radical excavation. The resulting assessment reduced remediation costs by ~$40 to $60 million. These methods have been adopted nationwide by the Corps.
