Werpy, Frye, Zacher and Miller Receive Patent for Hydrogenolysis of 6-Carbon Sugars

May 2005
Congratulations to ETD's Todd Werpy, John Frye, and Alan Zacher and Michigan State University's Dennis Miller for their recent U.S. patent award (#6,841,085). This invention provides a new method of converting bio-based materials such as sugars and sugar alcohols into a variety of desirable chemical products as opposed to traditional petroleum-based methods. For example, reaction of glycerol with hydrogen over a rhenium-containing catalyst results in superior conversion and selectivity to propylene glycol. Using this invention may help reduce the need for petroleum in the future. Again, congratulations team!
