Huneycutt Helps Middle School Students to Launch Science Experiment into Space

November 2005
For four years, ETD's Scott Huneycutt has worked with New York City middle school students to create a science experiment on radiation exposure that would fly into space on a NASA Shuttle. The students wanted to know if different wearable fabrics had different abilities to block radiation experienced by astronauts. Scott and the Hanford External Dosimetry group provided small dosimeters that could be wrapped in various fabrics to be sent into outer space. He also provided information about dosimetry, radiation, and the health effects of radiation exposure. Their experiment has been on the International Space Station for six months. It was recently returned to Earth and is now ready for the class to analyze. Thank you, Scott, for sharing the excitement of science with others!
