PNNL Team Wins Patent for Microcomponent Chemical Process Sheet Architecture

February 2006
Congratulations to ETD's Robert Wegeng and Dean Kurath and ESTD's Michele Friedrich for their Canadian patent award (#2,234,831). They invented a microcomponent sheet architecture where macroscale production is achieved with a large number of microscale elements operating in parallel. The invention enables the assembly of multiple chemical plant operations on a single "chip" in a manner that is similar to the way we embody multiple electronic operations on a single microprocessor computer chip. Chemical plant operations that can be included are chemical reactions, chemical separations, heat exchange, pumping and valving. Congratulations again, team!
