Local Section Receives National Honor for Advocacy for Women in Chemistry

October 2006
Congratulations to the Richland Section of the American Chemical Society on winning the 2006 ChemLuminary Award for Outstanding Advocacy on Behalf of Women in the Chemical Sciences. The chapter brought together 100+ middle school girls for a day-long "Girls in Science" event focused on analyzing evidence and forensics to illustrate chemistry in a tangible way. Other activities included a 2-day Girl/Boy Scouts Chemistry merit badges event, college student affiliate poster sessions and innovative local meetings and hands-on chemistry events on the Umatilla Reservation. ETD's Sam Bryan, Janet Bryant, Tim Hubler, Bruce McNamara, Dennis Wester; FSD's Bill Samuel, Therese Clauss; ESTD's Novella Bridges; NSD's Kayte Denslow, Rich Lucke and CER's Amanda Kissire are section officers or committee chairs. Thank you, all, for encouraging women to pursue and excel in chemical science careers.
