ETD Staff Volunteer Expertise for Regional Ice Age Flood Map

June 2007
Thank you, Team Battelle participants, for creating an exciting map highlighting local features left behind by some of the world's largest floods during the last Ice Age. The map, created by the Lake Lewis Chapter of the Ice Age Floods Institute, was developed for the City of Richland to educate visitors about the local landscape. Two driving routes lead visitors through the Columbia Basin countryside to experience the immensity of the Ice Age floods and their impacts on the terrain, the soils and the local wine country. "We're hoping it will encourage visitors to spend an extra day, visit some of the wineries and learn more about the geological history that shaped some of our landscape," said George Last, ETD scientist and President of the Lake Lewis Chapter. Maps are available at http://environment.pnl.gov/iafmap/, area hotels and the Tri-Cities Visitor and Convention Bureau.
