Team Wins Innovation Award for Functionalized Nanoporous Thin Films

July 2007
Congratulations to ETD's Shane Addleman and Rick Skaggs and ESTD's Glen Fryxell and Shari Li on winning a prestigious R&D 100 Award for their customized sorbent material that preconcentrates toxic metals in water, creating samplers that increase detection sensitivity a thousand times. R&D Magazine presents the awards annually to the 100 most innovative scientific and technical breakthroughs of the past year. The coating or Functionalized Nanoporous Thin Films technology is used on sampling discs. The discs then easily capture and concentrate heavy metal contaminants in water sources, such as streams and groundwater. The sampling discs can be quickly analyzed with X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to detect the presence of toxic metals. The technology was developed with PANalytical, an international supplier of analytical instrumentation and software for X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.
