Hazardous Material Identification and Control Research Award

January 2010
Mike Truex, Vince Vermuel, Mart Oostrom, Rob Mackley, Donny Mendoza, and Brad Fritz Congratulations to EED’s Hazardous Material Identification and Control Research team, which was recognized for demonstrating dedication to the field of hazardous materials management through its research contributions. Team members worked with industrial partners to develop a method to inject 2-micron-diameter iron particles into an aquifer at Fort Lewis, Wash., contaminated with trichloroethene (TCE). When the test zone temperature was increased, using electrical resistance heating (also developed by PNNL), TCE dechlorination dramatically increased. The combined heating and chemical reaction treatment technique is expected to cost less than other approaches to contaminant source remediation.  The award was given by the Eastern Washington Chapter of the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers (EWCACHMM) for accomplishments in the area of hazardous materials management in the Eastern Washington Chapter Area.
