Roy Kropp - PNNL scientist honored with naming of crab genus

March 2013
A team of researchers from Brazil and California has discovered a new genus of Cryptochiridae—tiny, mostly tropical crabs that make dwellings in coral—and have paid tribute to Roy and his research by naming it in his honor. Kroppcarcinus combines Roy's name and the Greek word for crab. In the team's research report on the new genus, which appeared last fall in the Scientia Marina journal, it was noted that Roy "has dedicated a good part of his life to the study of Cryptochiridae." Roy wrote his doctoral dissertation on Cryptochiridae in the 1980s, and over time has become a recognized expert on coral gall crabs
