Hanford Site-Wide Assessment Project

U.S. Department of Energy initiated development of the System Assessment Capability in 1999. PNNL is the task lead for the site-wide assessment effort for the Groundwater Remediation Project, managed by Plateau Remediation Contract. Assessments performed with the tool help decision-makers evaluate cumulative effects of contamination at the Hanford Site. The initial assessment modeled the movement of contaminants from more than 1000 Hanford waste sites and incorporated data for radioactive and chemical contaminants as well as other information. It predicts risks to human health, ecological resources, local economies and cultural resources for periods of thousands or tens of thousands of years.
