U.S. Nuclear Utility Worker Dosimetry for IARC Project

Nuclear Utility Worker Inclusion in IARC Collaborative Study

PNNL was contracted during 1999-2001 to prepare occupational radiation exposure, vital status and employment files for 15 U.S. nuclear utilities for their participation in the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Collaborative study. This study included participation by 16 countries with a combined total of approximately 600,000 workers. The IARC study, "Analysis of the Mortality Experience Amongst U.S. Nuclear Power Industry Workers after Chronic Low-Dose Exposure to Ionizing Radiation," Radiation Research; Volume 162, Page 517-526, was published in 2004.

The work performed involved data receipt and analysis for approximately 60,000 nuclear workers. To arrive at the total U.S. employment occupational dose, cooperative research agreements were established among IARC, PNNL, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission .
