Center of Excellence in Chemical Hydrogen Storage

This multidisciplinary center is led by PNNL and Los Alamos National Laboratory. It comprises projects in the area of chemical hydrogen storage at the two laboratories in addition to seven university and four industry partners. Chemically based hydrogen storage offers the opportunity to store hydrogen at high volumetric and mass density through the design of molecules that reversibly release hydrogen under pressure or temperature swing. The projects have heavy focus on light element (B, C, N, P, etc.) chemical synthesis, bench-scale engineered systems and prototype development. PNNL leads activities in the area of storage via amine-borane analogues, computational chemistry, and engineering for the center.
