River Protection Project – Waste Treatment Plant
The waste treatment plant being built at the Hanford Site will be the largest chemical processing plant in the United States. Bechtel National Inc. (BNI) is the designer and constructor. PNNL is conducting research and testing in the following major areas in support of BNI's design:
- Waste Characterization
- Regulatory Data Quality Objectives
- Cs/Tc Ion Exchange
- Sr/TRU Precipitation
- Ultra Filtration
- Pulsed Jet Mixing
- Low-Activity Waste Vitrification
- High-Level Waste Vitrification
- Statistics for Waste Form Qualification
- Staff Augmentation to Research and Technology and Process Technology Departments
- Stack Emissions Modeling
In March 2001, PNNL entered into a contract with BNI to support their research and testing activities. The current value of this contract is ~$75M. This work involves nearly 60 FTEs. Currently, the project is on time and on budget. For a listing of published reports, visit the project website.
