Risk Management and Modeling: Geostatistics and Uncertainty Quantification

Understanding the spatial variability of subsurface properties and the impact of that on the uncertainty of model predictions is a critical challenge across the DOE complex. PNNL has a team of nationally recognized experts in the use of geostatistics and UQ for CO2 sequestration, contaminated soil and groundwater, and geothermal and unconventional oil and gas resources.

Impacts

Characterized the spatial distribution and uncertainty of extractable uranium in the vadose zone (SC and EM). Evaluated the impact of variability in seal and reservoir properties on pressure buildup and potential for leakage of CO2(NRAP, Sim-SEQ). Built stochastic lithofacies models of Hanford waste sites used in UQ studies (ASCEM).

Distinctive Capabilities

Wide degree of expertise in geostatistics, data assimilation, and UQ. Well-versed in the use of inversion to constrain the distribution of subsurface properties. Experienced in a wide range of environmental and energy applications, including well-bore and geophysical data.
