Science to Solutions: Integrated Impact
The RMTD group provides an integrated solution connecting basic science needs to solving engineering problems. Our group works together on many different project to provide comprehensive, technologically rigorous, and fundamentally effective first-of-a-kind deployed systems.
Process flow of bench scale tests to the Research Scale Melter. The far left image shows how the develops new glass formulations in the Glass Development Lab. The middle image shows engineering-scale testing of the simulant-based slurry developed by the Interfacial Science & Rheology Team in the Laboratory Scale Melter. The far right image shows how the Process Engineering and Development Team generated a continuous process for converting the slurry based feed into glass.
Process flow of bench scale tests all the way to the railroad car of bulk vitrified glass. The far left image shows how the developed glass formula through tests in the Glass Development Lab. The middle image shows the continuous engineering scale In-Container Vitrification™. The far right image shows the ICV Bulk Vitrification glass in a railroad car at the AMEC facility.
Series of images from the Reactor Disablement Program showing scale up from bench to full-scale implementation. The first image is of a graphite coupon being tested in a beaker for absorption data, the second image is of workers testing prototype equipment in the laboratory, and the final image is of a full-height graphite column (7 story tower), for a training exercise of PNNL designed equipment.
Series of images showing the process flow development of ultrafiltration of waste products. The first image shows a characterization test of the simulant waste, the second image is of a large scale ultrafiltration test line, and the final image shows a 1/4 full-scale test of the designed ultrafiltration system.
