Groundwater/Surface Water Interaction (Hyporheic Zone)

PNNL performs basic and applied research characterizing the interaction between groundwater and surface water systems.  We have developed innovative methods to measure groundwater and contaminant flux to river systems.  Our expertise includes:

  • design of monitoring networks for sites where contaminated groundwater discharges into surface water systems,
  • field implementation of sample collection equipment and in situ monitoring probes, and
  • development of data sets to support ecological risk determinations at the groundwater/surface water interface.
