Marine Sciences Laboratory

PNNL's Marine Sciences Laboratory, located on Washington State’s Olympic Peninsula and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, is the U.S. Department of Energy's only marine research laboratory.

The Marine Sciences Laboratory has 8,344 ft² (775 m²) of analytical and general purpose laboratories and 6,881 ft² (639 m²) of wet or support laboratories supplied with seawater and freshwater that can be heated, cooled, or filtered to mimic nearly any marine, estuarine, or freshwater environment. The Marine Sciences Laboratory also has an on-site, state-of-the-art wastewater treatment system. Two research vessels (28- and 23-ft) are used for sample collection and for deployment of equipment such as underwater video and side-scan sonar. Additionally, the boats serve as dive platforms for the MSL Dive Team’s research divers.
