Scientific Diving

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Marine Sciences Laboratory (MSL) in Sequim, Washington is home to the U.S. Department of Energy’s only dive program. The MSL Scientific Dive Team offers services to clients and program managers needing specific information best obtained through direct observation, data and sample collection, as well as placement, recovery, and maintenance of scientific instruments and other underwater activities requiring minimal environmental disturbance. The divers are experts in a variety of scientific disciplines applicable to programs that support both environmental and national security interests.

The team uses sophisticated SCUBA equipment, advanced training, and underwater communications to enhance diver safety and efficiency. MSL divers have experience working in coastal zones, estuaries, and riverine environments with wide variations in current, temperature, and visibility. The team has two research vessels available for use as dive platforms. Primary capabilities include:

  • Scientific surveys and sampling
  • Habitat assessment and restoration
  • Equipment deployment and maintenance
  • Photography and videography
The Marine Sciences Laboratory, a department of the Energy and Environmental Division of PNNL, is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in coastal ecological and marine research. The dive team’s National Laboratory affiliation provides both unique research opportunities and world-class technical support, which we, in turn, can offer our clients.
