Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) Laboratory
The OSL laboratory develops and characterizes phosphor technology to measure radiation exposure to personnel, objects and to the environment. The OSL technology involves the optical stimulation of solid-state materials with light to induce luminescence. Luminescence proportional to the radiation exposure occurs either simultaneously or after stimulation (phosphorescence).
OSL technology has many applications, such as:
- radiation dose measurements to radiation worker personnel and the environment
- medical imaging
- nuclear non-proliferation
- radiological medical sterilization (high dose) and polymer and material modification dosimetry
- U.S. Department of Homeland Security applications
- high-density data storage.
