Biography

Dr. Jens Darsell received a Ph.D. in Materials Science from Washington State University in 2007. His dissertation focused on developing a family of Air Braze alloys based on Ag-CuO-Pd with potential applications in electrochemical devices such as solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). His primary focus since joining PNNL as a staff member in 2008 has been on joining problems including metal and ceramic joints using air braze alloys or glass sealants for SOFCs. In addition he has specified and used other soldering and brazing methods for joining aluminum and stainless steel, aluminum to magnesium, titanium alloys, as well as nickel alloy and stainless steel heat exchangers. In 2009 he began to expand into Friction Stir Welding and Processing (FSW/FSP) of advanced high temperature materials used in power plants as well as some temperature alloys. Late in 2011 he was involved in the early work to use friction to consolidate and extrude materials in what has now become known as Shear Assisted Processing and Extrusion (ShAPE). In addition to joining and processing of materials he has significant experience in material characterization techniques ranging from SEM, XRD, and several thermal analysis techniques.

  • Additives to promote fine grained materials such as Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) steels.
  • Joining of metals and ceramics using air brazing or other forms of brazing and soldering.
