Biography

Dr. Weimar, Chief Economist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, has over 40 years of experience in economics. He has been at the laboratory since 1993. Dr. Weimar has developed program and project-specific economics and financial analyses for a number of public agencies, primarily for the United States Department of Energy (DOE), California Energy Commission, ISO New England, US Department of Defense (DoD), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Montana Department of Transportation, Internal Revenue Service (IRS), United States Department of Homeland Security, United States Department of Transportation (US DOT), National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), and the California Energy Commission.

His professional career includes a broad range of experience from agricultural policy to energy policy using the modeling of systems. He has worked on a variety of projects associated with nuclear power, wind power, solar PV, solar thermal, geothermal, landfill gas, biomass, hydrogen, and fossil fuel. I have also worked on valuing frequency regulation services for the California ISO and the New England ISO. I have also used economics to track and identify tax avoidance perpetrators. In addition, I have worked programs associated with detecting weapons of mass destruction, and cyber security.

Currently he is working on valuing resilience in the face of increasing severe weather for the Federal Energy Management Program, Building Technology Office, Office of Electricity and the Solar Energy Technology Office, valuing pumped storage hydro, evaluating the financial feasibility of geothermal electricity, costing and valuing small modular nuclear reactors, streamlining the Defense Logistics Agency’s procurement processes, costing and valuing marine energy projects and evaluating rare metal extraction from seawater.
