Biography

Dr. Jiang joined the staff of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) as a scientist in 2000 after his postdoctoral research at PNNL. His research areas have ranged from advanced structural materials for future fission and fusion reactors, model nuclear waste forms, novel nuclear sensor materials, to tritium breeder materials. His major research has been focusing on ion-beam irradiation induced effects in solid materials, including single crystals, nanocrystalline materials, and nanocomposites of carbides, nitrides, oxides and metals. The technical issues that have been addressed in his research include defect accumulation and amorphization processes, diffusion, trapping and clustering of defects and implanted species, secondary-phase precipitation, formation of voids and gas bubbles, material radiolysis, phase segregation, in-situ study of microstructural evolution induced by ion-beam irradiation, thermal and dynamic defect recovery, defects, amorphization, lattice strain and recrystallization at interfaces. In addition, he has investigated ion stopping powers, charge state distributions and scattering/reaction cross sections, and has developed novel ion-beam analytical methods. He has employed a variety of experimental methods in his research, including ion beam irradiation, ion beam analysis, in-situ helium ion microscopy, optical and x-ray techniques, electron microscopy and spectroscopy, and topography. He has published over 200 journal papers, book chapters, review articles and research highlights. He is the lead author on about 100 of those publications with a high rate of citations. He has also delivered extensive presentations at conferences, society meetings and institutional seminars.
