Biography

Dr. Szecsody has conducted research studies quantifying geochemical and microbial mechanisms that occur in porous media during advective transport at different scales. This includes laboratory research and model simulation at the batch scale to identify and parameterize reactions and processes, and 1-D flow experiments to address process coupling with advection, 2-D laboratory experiments (1 m to 7 m) to address the importance of spatial heterogeneities and field experiments to upscale engineered geochemical remediation methods. This research also involves development of transport codes that incorporate multispecies transport with multiple chemical equilibrium/kinetic and microbial reactions. Compounds investigated include energetics (RDX, TNT, HMX, CL-20, NDMA), chlorinated solvents (TCE, PCE, DCE, VC), and metals/radionuclides (Sr, U, Cs, Co, Tc, Cr). Current fundamental research involves the geochemical and microbial reactions of energetics in sediments and microbial attachment/detachment mechanisms. Current applied research is focused on upscaling geochemical or coupled geochemical/microbial redox technologies to aquifer systems at chromate and nitrate-contaminated sites.
