Biography
Dr. Yulong Xie's expertise pertains mainly to simulation and data analysis. He conducts building energy simulations to support the development of building energy codes and standards. He analyzes metering data to identify energy-efficient measures leading to efficient building design and field survey data to quantify energy saving that could be achieved through increased code compliance. He organizes large-scale energy simulations to evaluate potential energy savings and peak demand reductions from retuning opportunities. Since joining PNNL in 2000, he has also been contributing his simulation and data analytical expertise to a variety of projects, including applying neural networks, support vector machines, decision trees, and random forests to model salmon spawning behavior; deploying genetic algorithms for the siting of a meteorological monitoring station; using Bayesian modeling to assess pallid sturgeon abundance in the Missouri River system; applying Monte Carlo simulation of energy cascades from radiation interaction for the discovery of detector materials; and using Receptor Modeling for identifying aerosol sources and tracing their origins. He has authored/coauthored more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.
