Low Temperature Catalytic Oxidation for HCCI Emissions Control

Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is a novel form of combustion that allows ultra low NOx emissions. The drawback is low exhaust temperature and large hydrocarbon and CO emissions. In order for HCCI to be a feasible approach for combustion, new oxidation catalysts must be developed that operate at temperatures below 150°C. Nanophase gold, bimetallics and complex oxides are all being investigated to meet operational requirements.
